Planetary Boundaries Evaluation System

We use APres™, our absolute sustainability framework, to measure performance against the planetary boundaries instead of a moving baseline.

For: Business · Institutional

A night-time globe centred on the Atlantic, with coloured bars rising from the continents to show scale

Efficiency gains lower the per unit intensity metric, and the savings can be spent again as more output.

How can a firm support the Planetary Boundaries then? A report can show progress every year until it stalls, and without answering the question a board, an investor or a regulator needs answered: whether the company operates within an ecological limit that does not move.

Our approach

  1. Measure against the boundaries

The current footprint set directly against the relevant planetary boundaries, each one a fixed reference point instead of the company's own past figure. It reframes the problem, it changes mindsets, it opens opportunities.
  2. Apply the APres methodology throughout

From materiality, to intensity evaluation, to carrying capacity setting, use the same method from cradle-to-grave for each value chain so results compare across the business and, where relevant, with peers assessed the same way.
  3. Prioritise interventions

Not all actions have the same impact. Ranking gap-closing actions by their potential to impact the firm favourably and the aggregate socio-economic system it operates in.
  4. Document the assessment

A documented assessment, compatible with the CSRD, for investors, regulators or a board risk committee, with the method behind every figure and its limits stated plainly.

Our work

Wide Open World is the first use case of internalising the planetary boundaries with APres. Using APres helped Wide Open World prioritise efforts on dimensions that matter most, especially land-use.
