Portfolio & Value Proposition Design

A product line can win customers and earn its margin while it draws on a resource that a physical limit already constrains. A portfolio review that ranks offers on value and margin alone does not see the third test. We test each offer on three counts and decide with you what to grow, reshape or retire.

For: Business

Sustainability work can arrive after the product and portfolio decisions are made, as a reporting layer, an offset or a claim.

An offer holds up within the planetary boundaries only if it does three things at once: creates value a customer pays for, lets the business keep enough of that value to compete, and maintains the natural capital it draws on. A report added afterwards cannot test any of them.

Our approach

  1. Evaluate each offer against the three dimensions

For each product, service and customer segment, an evaluation is carried out resulting in a score on customer value, value capture and ecological limits, with the offers that fall short on any one of them named.
  2. Redesign the value proposition

Where the shortfall is structural, options for what the offer, its pricing or the customer relationship would need to become are curated and a practical plan created to address each one. Where the value proposition is new, using the APres™ methodology supports the ideation process to uncover new sustainable value positions.
  3. Decide what to grow, reshape or retire

A prioritised plan focused on moving a portfolio toward a more favourable risk/reward position. One that maximises the synergistic fit between customer value, value capture, and planetary boundaries stewardship.

Bring the decision you cannot yet answer with confidence.

A first conversation starts with the choice in front of you and the limit it should be tested against.
